What Is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a collaborative tool available in Office 365 that helps remote teams to work together and share files. Teams can be accessed through a desktop application, a web-based application, or a mobile app.

Microsoft Teams integrates a collection of Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, Skype, and SharePoint. Teams also incorporates chat and collaborative features that make it possible for members of an organization to chat, hold virtual meetings, share files, talk face-to-face and collaborate on projects.

What Are the Main Features of Microsoft Teams?

The following are the core features of Microsoft Teams

  • Teams: To start collaborating on projects, you will need a team. A team is a collection of people, content, and tools based on a particular group or project. Setting up Teams is easy and done in a few clicks. All you need is a Team name and a description; this allows you to add team members.
  • Channels: Each team has subsections known as channels. Segregated conversations based on tasks, projects, or even departments, take place here. By default, Teams creates a general Channel for all team members.
  • Chat: This is where you can start a conversation with other team members without regard to functional groups. From the chat window, you can call, share screens, and add others to the conversation. Chats are saved, searchable, and members can pick up where they left off at any time.
  • Calendar: This is where you can view your weekly schedule, deadlines and create new meetings. This calendar is accessible to everyone in your team. You can create a new meeting from the calendar by clicking on New Meeting.
  • Audio and Video Conferencing: With teams, you can make one on one or group calls to people in your organization directly from your chat list without the need to host a team meeting. This is done by clicking the audio or video call buttons from the chat section. These calls are private and don’t appear in any team conversation. You can also make calls and capture voicemails from the Calls tab.
  • Files: When a new team is created in Microsoft Teams, it gets a SharePoint Online and library to store team files. All media shared across the chat window will be automatically saved on this folder. This file storage area can also be customized to include third-party cloud storage services, such as OneDrive and Dropbox.

Effective communication and collaboration are vital for the smooth running of your business operations. Microsoft Teams can meet your communication and collaboration needs and help you enhance your company’s productivity.
